ALBUM OF AUTHORS (exclusively for female reader fans):

Normally you find out how amazing certain books are from their covers. Since we had no doubts about this, we have rather filled in this place of readers’ attention with an excerpt from a several month-long fight about the book´s title. No matter what, it is not a trifle when 4 + 1 authors are writing the same book. It is an ongoing war.

Subject: The last appeal

Date: 2 August, 2002 06:55:46 AM

Hello Rasto:

According to simultaneous emails resent to me by Jerry, it seems to me that the title Death of the Goat has an exceptionally great longevity supported by opinions of people in your proximity and who undoubtedly are excellent literary experts. We can have professional literary attributes but more importantly, although it may be diametrically opposed, we have a common reader, who simply wishes for a good book, walks around in a book store and casually picks out books from overfilled shelves dominated by all sorts of American junk with very similar titles, in other words the ones where every second word is “death“.

The second aspect of my ill feeling comes from this very word. The word “death“ actually has a particularly dangerous meaning that arouses negative feelings. Moreover, the title Death of the Goat yields absolutely no clear meaning, whether it is a matter of an event, meaning the death of the goat, or whether it is a matter of a tangible attribute, meaning a quantum space-time fluctuation. In the latter case, however, this would not be true because animals do not have this convenience as humans where each person has his/her own death. In other words, you can see your own death, or quantum space-time fluctuation, for a moment when you open your eyes wide without focusing on anything in particular, just staring absentmindedly, and always look through the corner of your left eye only. If you see a fleeting shadow, spots, flash or some other disruption or irregularity in your field of vision, then it is your own Death that confirms the integrity of consciousness all your life.

Our knowledge about death ends at this point though. Opinions about a deeper meaning of this phenomenon lie merely in hypotheses and speculations. That is why I think that arbitrarily, without being supported by scientific experiments, it is not appropriate for us to needlessly materialize this phenomenon in our literary work, which will by itself have a powerful effect on our readers in the spiritual sphere.

Thus only the first assumption remains, which indicates that the title “Death of the Goat“ represents a departure of an animal, the goat. In that case I recommend the following. In order to avoid the above mentioned risk, we should modify the title to reflect an event, in other words we should use phrases such as: “Demise of the Goat, Last Breath of the Goat, The Goat Kicking the Bucket, Goat’s Departure from This World, Expiration of the Goat, Passing Away of the Goat, Eradication of the Goat, Fading Away of the Goat” or similar titles that will avoid the dangerous word – death. Rasto, please take it as my last desperate appeal before something happens which we could regret later very, very much. Let us not play around with something we do not understand. Why take any unnecessary risk? Damn it, we are still young and the whole life is still in front of us. So why should we inspire that which is always on our left side?

Incidentally, why did you stay away from using Jerry´s wonderful title “The Nail of Butter” that you liked very much?

Take care, Johnny.

PS: In conclusion, if you decide to stick to your own after all, then heck with it and put death in there. I will accept it. At least I will have peace of mind knowing that I have done everything possible to convince you.
